Prostitution happens everywhere. However, not many people want to see images or hear stories of prostitution. It makes people sad and uncomfortable. Consequently, these women have become a forgotten population in society. My photos aim to portray the real lives and struggles of sex workers in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Many sex workers are stuck in a cycle that includes drugs, sexual abuse and homelessness. When caught in the act of sex work, the Utah law favors the men, giving them the chance to avoid jail time by taking a 10-week course and paying a fine. The women, however, are thrown in jail without any other options. They are left with very few resources to help them get out of the cycle they often feel stuck in.
These photos are the first set in an ongoing photo project.
