Gabriel came to Utah to live with his biological father when he was 19, but after a few weeks, his dad had him leave. Gabe took a duffel bag of his possessions to the Rio Grande homeless shelter, but didn’t like life there. He became a fixture at “the block,” the dangerous drug market that surrounds the shelter, where he used drugs and sold meth, heroin and crack. “I’ve seen a lot of people die of overdoses,” he says. He left behind the world of “the block” and drug use after he met his fiancée at McDonalds and had a little girl with her. Having visited his father when he was behind bars, he wants his daughter to grow up proud of him. “I don’t want my daughter seeing me how I saw my dad in jail,” he says. “Life on the block drains you emotionally, it takes your emotions out; you don’t rely on happiness, jealousy or any emotions that you feel.”

Born in a Russian orphanage, Kent and his sister were adopted by a Mormon family and brought to Utah. When Kent came out as gay to his parents as a teenager, they drew a line between their faith and his sexuality. “When I didn’t follow their rules, when I’d do my own thing, I ended up being homeless,” he says. “I’d tell (parents) to love their kids more, you can never show them enough love.” He wants parents to know, “They are lucky to have each other. Once you get to this point where I am, you don’t get to have that back, that feeling of a whole family.”

After she was abused as a child, Isadora went through state and private facilities. She describes a journey of violence and horror. That journey taught her, she says, “You can’t trust anybody.” At age 19, she started living on the street, finding shelter in alleyways, the backseat of a car or on a friend’s couch. “You never see yourself doing things you only see others doing until you are in that low spot,” she says. “The government long ago saw me as a lost cause. I felt I’d never be special, I’d never smile again, never laugh again, never find someone to love.”

Named after a Flintstones’ character because as a child he constantly “broke stuff,” 6-year-old Bam woke up one day to find his grandmother had died next to him while they slept. He left Texas as a teenager to attend JobCorp in Clearfield, Utah, but when he learned that his beloved older sister had killed herself, he fell apart. He graduated from JobCorp and rented a room in a house near Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, only to be forced out onto the streets after the city closed the house. Then he slept in a beat-up, broken-down BMW with a friend. “It’s hard to be young,” he says. “Everybody knows me as a goofy, loving person, but the majority of time I’m sad. I don’t like to show my emotions, I put on a mask. They don’t know what my true pain is. I don’t like opening up to people.”

When he was 15, Bryant was put out on the street of his “one-horse” Texan town by his aunt. He walked from Texas to Utah to attend college at the invitation of his uncle in Salt Lake City. It was a three-month, perilous journey he made at night, sleeping during the day. When he got to Utah, his uncle rejected him and he lived on Salt Lake’s streets. “Sometimes I wonder why I’m in this world,” he says. He lived in a tent by the Jordan river, only for snow to rip through it one night while he slept. He woke to find his fingers and toes had turned purple from frostbite. “I learned about myself you’re only as strong as your will. As long as you have a dream you can keep going, you don’t feel lost in the world.”

My family is my core. My cousin, Jasmine, is not just a cousin- she’s my sister. We’re both in the middle of our lives and thinking of our futures- trying to make plans that balance our families, careers, and homes. How can we plan this, not knowing if our near future will have total social unrest, the ability to move about freely, or a functioning economy? Jazzy constantly reminds me to find a positive perspective, to “make decisions based on hope, not fear.”

Visits on the lawn with my grandma this summer are the kind of special memories that are so special, you already miss them while they’re happening. As I learn the stories of her life, and of my Chinese culture, I feel the respect for my ancestry grow. With this respect and knowledge, I feel a strength building inside of me. Talking to my grandma makes me want to do better, to be better, to make her proud, to honor my ancestors. On top of the perfectly trimmed umbrella tree, the glorious red and golden Phoenix lands- ready to rise from the still-burning ashes. We’ll watch it fly away gracefully, with 100 colorful songbirds following.

When spending time with kids, it’s almost impossible to not feel hope for the future and a desire to improve our communities. Chloe is my best friend Sara’s daughter. This is a moment when Chloe and I were alone together. We’ve had to evaluate our friendships with new considerations that keep our safety in mind. In this process, we find which ones really matter to us, matter so much that the joy and peace they bring are worth the risk of a virus.

Since the pandemic started, my faithful dog and I have spent so much time together, it feels like we’re melding into each other. He’s always here, lovingly following me around- laying under the desk, sleeping, as I type these words. After 13 years of friendship every single day, he is truly a best friend in the way no other friend can be.

My mom and stepdad talk to my niece on the phone. Video calls have become a common way of life. While I greatly miss our family get-togethers, I’m grateful for the chance to see loved ones, even if only on a screen. My mom is the center of our family- an ever-loving human whose purpose seems to be to bring people together in various, subtle ways- usually involving food. I’ve been discussing world events with her all summer and her simple, succinct statement keeps popping up in my head, “It seems like people forgot how to be kind.”

Duckie, a former student of mine, has been involved with the Black Lives Matter Utah chapter. Throughout the summer, I’ve observed her activism through educating others, protesting and creating positive representation of the racial justice movement. I know the future is bright in the hands of such highly aware, devoted, talented and caring young people.

“Sammy Pershing Boothe was born in Ogden, Utah, June 25, 1918, a son of Jennie Alvord and Morris Artemus Boothe. He graduated from Evanston High School, winning the valedictorian and Best-All-Around Boy awards (1936). He attended the University of Wyoming on scholarship for one year and Military Preparatory School in Long Beach, California for one year. He received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and graduated from there December, 1941 with the rank of Ensign. While attending the academy, he was a starring player on the Navy football team. He served in World War II in the South Pacific and Alaskan campaigns aboard the U.S.S. Louisville. In November 1943 he was assigned to flight training at Dallas, Texas. Upon receiving his Navy wings he was assigned to special night fighter training at Vero Beach, Florida. Lt. Boothe was killed April 10, 1945 when his plane went dowon in the Atlantic Ocean. Since the body was never recovered, a marker has been placed in Memory Grove in Salt Lake City, Utah in the plot of ground surrounding Meditation Chapel dedicated to those Utah boys with no known graves. Pior to his death, he had advanced to the rank of Lieutenant, Senior Grade. Sammy was an Elder and a devout Latter-day Saint. “Martin W McGrath escaped into the mountains after the fall of Bataan to the Japanese and he fought with Philippine guerrillas. He was first reported missing on May 7, 1942 and officially declared dead on February 1, 1946. He had been held as a prisoner of war and was among the many POWs on the Bataan Death March. He was able to escape and was last seen near Lubao, Pampanga Province. His actual date of death is unknown.” https://www.honorstates.org/index.php?id=117127 Bataan Death March : The surrendered Filipinos and Americans soon were rounded up by the Japanese and forced to march some 65 miles from Mariveles, on the southern end of the Bataan Peninsula, to San Fernando. The men were divided into groups of approximately 100, and the march typically took each group around five days to complete. The exact figures are unknown, but it is believed that thousands of troops died because of the brutality of their captors, who starved and beat the marchers, and bayoneted those too weak to walk. “Courtney Rogers Draper, the first son of Delbert Morley Draper and Frances Mary Rogers Draper, was born on 5 April 1913 in Salt Lake City. A former student reporter for The Salt Lake Tribune, Draper attended Stewart training and East high school and was graduated from the University of Utah and George Washington University, Washington, D. C., where he received his LLB degree. An auditor for the U. S. accounting department while attending George Washington University, he was secretary to Gen. Hugh S. Johnson during N R A days. A member of the Utah bar and junior bar, he practiced law in Washington, D. C. and Utah. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Salt Lake City Junior Chamber of Commerce. A reserve officer in the U. S. army, he was called to active service July 1, 1941. Transferred to the Philippine Islands Aug. 1, 1941, he was stationed at Fort Stotsenberg and Clark field, and was present during the first bombing of the latter field. Transferred to Mindanao before the fall of Corregidor, he served there until ordered to surrender. As a prisoner of the Japanese he was interned until June, 1944 and was then transferred to Cabanatuan, Bilibid. He was being transferred again aboard the Enoura Maru, one of the infamous Hell Ships, when the transport was severely damaged in Takao Harbor, Formosa (now Taiwan) by U.S. Navy aircraft from the USS Hornet. At the time, military officials were unaware that POW's were packed like sardines in these unmarked ships, and thousands lost their lives. At the time of his death he had three sisters and a brother, as well as one sister who preceded him in death. His remains have to date not been identified, but may be interred at the Punch Bowl in Hawaii. Enlisted: July 1940 Age 18 1943 on 16 July - Missing in Action in the Pacific near Solomon Islands Reported on 13 Sep 1943 Awarded the Silver Star posthumously on 04 Aug 1945 Plane Crash was later found and his file was updated with this in 1946: Killed off the coast of Villa Lavella, Solomon Islands on 16 Jul 1943 and died a day after his plane crashed.
